Black Male Mentors Just Makes Sense

Why is having good black male mentors so important? Well, Representation is everything. Especially for our youth, who are easily impressionable. Representation helps them to expand their mindset and see that they can achieve anything they want in life. The ultimate black male mentor, former President Barack Obama is a perfect example – because of Barack, millions of black boys across the globe know that they have the potential to be fearless and respected political leaders in this country.

This places a significant importance on mentors, particularly for underserved youth. A mentor is a trusted counselor or guide who provides support in various aspects of the mentee’s development, whether academic or professional. Most importantly, a mentor is someone who emulates and personifies all that our youth aspire to be. For many, a mentor is integral to reaching their goals and their character development. In a position of such influence to the mentee and their community, choosing the right mentor for underserved youth is critical. Read on to learn why black male mentors are the best choice for young black boys.

“Show me a successful individual and I’ll show you someone who had real positive influences in his or her life. I don’t care what you do for a living—if you do it well I’m sure there was someone cheering you on or showing the way. A mentor.” — Denzel Washington

This Thing of Ours

(A Coming-of-Age Young Adult Novel)

by Frederick Joseph

The powerful and timely YA novel debut from three-time New York Times best-selling author Frederick Joseph is a deeply heartfelt story—and a rallying cry against book banning.

In an instant, Ossie Brown’s entire future is in jeopardy when a torn ACL ends his promising basketball career. Now that basketball is no longer a major part of his identity, Ossie—a Black teen who doesn’t come from wealth and privilege—must navigate his new place in the social and academic ecosystems of his affluent, predominantly white school. When a Black teacher encourages him to join her highly regarded writing program, Ossie begins to find a new purpose, buoyed by not only the rich works of literature by marginalized authors he’s now reading, but also by new friends who see him as something more than an asset to the sports program. Everything changes when some students’ viral “anti-woke” video puts the teacher’s job, the writing program, and even Ossie’s friends’ safety at risk—and Ossie must find his true voice. This unflinching novel confronts critical issues like racism and classism, the treatment of student athletes, book banning and more while weaving together a moving testament to family, romance, friendship, and the power of words.
